Position
The island of Rab is situated in Kvarner Bay at latitude 44° north. It belongs to island group of the northern Adriatic sea.
It consists mainly of limestone forming two elevated plains; the peak Kamenjak (408 m) rises in the northeast, and Kalifront (92 m) in the southwest. Climate
The island of Rab has a pleasant Mediterranean climate, warm summers and mild winters.
The average annual temperature varies between 7 °C in winter and 26 °C in summer, remaining above 18 °C for more than 140 days a year. The average temperature of the sea around the island is
24 °C in summer and 12 °C in winter. With 2.499 hours of sunshine a year, Rab ranks among the sunniest parts of Europe.
Vegetation
The limestone parts of the island, particularly Kalifront, are partly covered with underbrush and the forest of the Mediterranean oak. Cedar, mulberry and several pine species are also found there. In the interior, arable part of the island, olives, wines and vegetable are cultivated.
People
About 9.000 inhabitants live in this beautiful island, and in the summer season this number triples.
Islanders' main occupations in the past were agriculture (especialy olive and wine growing, fishing and sheep farming. Nowadays, they are mostly oriented towards tourism and tourist related activities.
